Engagement Ring Guide

I recently released a guide on How to Shop for an Engagement Ring, which can be found in the top and footer navigation! Take a peek at the full guide or see a brief overview below.

Why Sofia Zakia

Our jewels are made with exquisite craftsmanship to create timeless designs using fine and ethically sourced materials.

Just as a book, film or song can give you the space to explore and reflect, so can the smallest objects. From wisp-thin rings to our Mothership UFOs, each piece has a story to tell. Narrative is important to us and we want our jewels to not only be beautiful but tell a story and evoke a sense of allure. Each piece offers purposeful elements or meaning, giving them a sense of thoughtful discovery, like deliciously stepping into a fairytale!

Important Things to Consider

Lifestyle: Does your partner spend a lot of time at the gym? Working with their hands? Cooking up a storm? All of these things should be taken into consideration when selecting an engagement ring. Stones like diamonds, sapphires and rubies are resilient enough for daily wear, while other stones like opals and pearls are a bit softer and require more careful attention.

Personal Style: What’s the first thing that comes into your mind when you think of your partner? Any favourite hobbies, films, books or places can help inspire an aesthetic when picking out an engagement ring. We have styles of all sorts – from timeless vintage-inspired classics, to bold and colourful starbursts. It’s helpful to put together a mental (or written!) list of elements that ties together your partner’s aesthetic. If you need help picking out a ring, or want to make something custom, reach out and we’ll do our best to work together to find something perfect.

Every piece is handmade in Montreal to ensure quality heirloom pieces that can be passed down from generation to generation. We are happy to help with any questions you may have! That includes discussing custom pieces if you’re searching for something more bespoke.

The Four C's of a Diamond

Diamonds are best known for their immense brilliance and ability to sparkle. Cut refers to the precise workmanship required to fashion a diamond’s proportions and symmetry to deliver the most magnificent radiance possible. Cut is the most crucial element of a diamond’s beauty and value. A correctly cut diamond will have specific proportions that harness the diamond’s internal brilliance to make it sparkle like a radiant star against a night sky.

Colour refers to the natural colour of a diamond on a scale of D – Z. Colour is caused by natural trace elements of chemicals present when the diamond was being formed under our planet’s crust. A chemically pure diamond will have no hue, and thus a higher value. Diamonds with less colour allow more light to pass through them, releasing more brilliant dispersion of light and colourful fire. We only accept diamonds that are categorized as “I” (near colourless) or higher.

A diamond’s clarity refers to its internal characteristics, known as inclusions. Inclusions may be crystals of foreign chemicals or unique imperfections (such as tiny cracks, clouds or feathers). The number, size, nature, location and visibility of inclusions all affect a diamond’s grade. Many inclusions are too tiny to be seen without a microscope and an expert eye, but we typically work with diamonds of higher clarity and hand-select each to make sure they look as beautiful as possible.

A diamond’s carat (ct.) refers to the weight measurement used exclusively to weigh gemstones and diamonds. Depending on the shape and type, carat size will show differently. Carat weight does not always reflect on the visual size of the stone, but is generally a safe indication of diameter.
